Business Situation and Requirements

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of death worldwide. Patients experiencing strokes, particularly those with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), face a high risk of mortality without rapid medical intervention. Clinical guidelines recommend a door-to-balloon (D2B) time of 90 minutes or less, yet delays often occur due to communication gaps between paramedics and doctors during the critical door-to-needle period, slowing life-saving treatment.

To address this challenge, the client wanted a mobile solution that could connect all healthcare workers involved in STEMI care. The goal was to improve coordination, streamline communication, and speed up critical decision-making so patients receive timely and effective treatment during emergencies.

Their key requirements included:

  • Build a mobile platform that tracks ambulance locations and consolidates critical patient data.

  • Include real-time ambulance tracking for hospital preparedness.

  • Ensure HIPAA-compliant patient data security.

  • Enable real-time alerts for critical updates.

  • Design intuitive interfaces for emergency use.

  • Support fast data entry and retrieval for clinicians.

The Solution

Our team defined the ideal system architecture, finalized detailed functional specifications, and created a clear product vision supported by a structured development roadmap. Once the strategy was approved, all business and technical requirements were aligned into a cohesive technology framework to ensure scalability, performance, and long-term stability.

Applying design thinking and role-based user analysis, our UI team crafted intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly interfaces tailored to the needs of different stakeholders and optimized for ease of use. Alongside the mobile apps, we developed a secure web-based admin panel to manage role-specific access, oversee system operations, and control sensitive information, enabling smooth workflows, strong data governance, and reliable system management across the entire platform.

Real-Time ECG & Patient Data Sharing:

Once a STEMI is identified, the app instantly transmits the patient’s ECG and critical details to all key stakeholders—including EMS, emergency departments, catheterization lab teams, and the on-call cardiologist—ensuring real-time visibility and faster clinical decisions.

Role-Based Access Modules:

The solution is built around four role-based modules—EMS, charge nurse, business clerk, and doctor—providing each user access only to the information relevant to their role, ensuring secure handling of patient health information (PHI).

Role-Based Access Modules

Intelligent Patient Intake & Hospital Recommendation:

Paramedics enter patient details such as ID, disease type, onset time, and symptoms, after which the system recommends an appropriate hospital and shares the information with the hospital care team to enable immediate preparation and treatment.

Real-Time Communication & Ambulance Tracking:

Once a hospital and doctor are assigned, a group chat connects paramedics, nurses, and doctors to coordinate care, while real-time Google Maps tracking allows stakeholders to monitor ambulance location and patient ETA.

Real-Time Communication & Ambulance Tracking:

The Impact

The solution accelerates STEMI treatment, ensuring patients receive timely, accurate care upon arrival. Deployed across six major Canadian hospitals, the application has been widely adopted and praised by healthcare providers for its usability and impact.

By consolidating patient data, providing real-time ambulance tracking, and monitoring professional performance, the platform streamlines resource allocation, speeds up decision-making, and significantly improves patient outcomes in emergency cardiac care.
